Not too long ago I wrote about the American Dental Association's (ADA) concern about the safety of commercial teeth whitening products and there's news that in the State Dental Commission in Connecticut held a hearing in December to review whether tooth whitening should be classified as ‘’dentistry’’ which would be a landmark decision in the debate as to whether teeth whitening dental products should be under the control of dentists where the safe usage of the product can be much more ensured.
Department of Public Health spokesman William Gerrish said that the commission had received complaints that tooth whitening was being done without a dentist’s supervision. But he could not specify the nature of those complaints or whether consumers had been harmed.
And as it stands there is still a tooth bleaching standard that is under review.
Personally we trust most of our patients' judgment when it comes to using over-the-counter teeth whitening products but will always suggest that you consult with us first as each persons oral condition differs and there is potential for long term negative results if not used properly.
