Let the summer celebrations begin!
Any good summertime celebration starts and ends with great food and tasty drinks. To explore this phenomenon, the Irmo Cosmetic Dentists Columbia staff went to identify healthy summer foods that are not only great for the body—but even better for your teeth!
Fruit salad. Crisp, cool and refreshing—there’s nothing like eating a fresh fruit salad during summer!
When you’re choosing the fruits for your salad, make sure you include teeth-friendly options like:
- Watermelon. It’s one of the best choices for the teeth, since it’s packed with water, preventing you from becoming dehydrated and increasing the flow of saliva in your mouth. This can help keep unwanted food particles and/or plaque from lingering inside your mouth.
- Kiwi. This fuzzy, yet sweet fruit is a great source of vitamin C. It can help maintain collagen in your gums, subsequently preventing gum infections, accelerating gum healing and strengthening the gums to prevent the development of periodontal diseases.
- Apple. Apples are natural toothbrushes. They help stimulate the gums, while increasing saliva production within the mouth. They also prevent cavity build-up, since it essentially cleanses the surface of the teeth.
Fruit smoothies. These cool and refreshing drinks are a great summer beverage choice. They’re delicious, filling and great for anyone watching their weight during summer celebrations. Fruits have natural sugar that sweeten your smoothies, so you don’t have to add any additional cavity-causing sugar.
Cocoa. This potential summer drink is incredibly good for the teeth. It’s filled with a substance that helps reduce gum inflammation, while preventing tooth erosion and decay. Maybe you should try this drink in iced form, served as a cool summer drink that’s also refreshing.
Cheese and onions. This tasty combo is a great burger topper. Cheese is low in sugars and acid while high in calcium—and a little known protein known as casein, which helps fortify the surface of the teeth. Onions are a natural body cleanser for the body and the mouth; it helps eliminate harmful bacteria while preventing the tooth from decay.
Celery. This go-to year round snack is also a great summer snack option. Many raw, fibrous veggies are great for the teeth, since they require lots of chewing, producing lots of saliva as a result. Celery breaks down into tiny strands that more or less clean the teeth.
