While there is no written account of the origin of the Christmas stocking (or stocking stuffers), there are some common legends that try to explain how this Christmas tradition started a long time ago.

You see, many years ago there lived a very poor man and his three beautiful daughters. But because he had no money to help pay for them to get married, he was very worried about what would happen to them after he died.

The story goes that St. Nicholas was passing through and heard the villagers talking about what would happen to the man and his daughters. He wanted to help, but it was well known that the man wouldn’t accept any help. So, St. Nicholas waited until it was nighttime and he secretly crept down through the chimney with three bags of gold coins – one for each girl.

As he was looking for hiding place for the bags, he noticed three stockings hanging over the mantelpiece – one for each girl – to dry by the fire. So he placed a bag of coins in each stocking and went about his way.

When the family woke up the next morning, they found the bags of gold coins and were overjoyed, because this meant that they were going to be able to get married and live happily ever after.
