Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts increase your body’s ability to fight bacteria and inflammation and help to protect your teeth and gums. Crisp fruits and raw vegetables such as carrots, apples and celery also help remove plaque and freshen breath.
Stop smoking and/or using other tobacco products. Tobacco affects your mouth in numerous ways. And according to your dentist Columbia, it’s not just smoking it that has negative effects on your oral health – even smokeless tobacco can be harmful to your teeth. The good news is that the risk of tooth loss diminishes after you stop the bad habit.
Put a limit on your alcohol intake. The Academy of General Dentistry finds that people who smoke, eat poorly and consume excessive alcohol also have more gum recession. Studies reveal that smokers who consume alcohol are less likely to brush their teeth regularly and are less concerned about their basic health than nonsmokers.
Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Brushing and flossing guards your teeth against decay and gum disease, which is caused by plaque. Both brushing and flossing are important for proper oral health, but only flossing can remove plaque from between teeth and the area located below the gum line, where decay and gum disease often starts.
Visit your dentist for regular checkups. A visit to your dentist Columbia at least twice a year can help prevent dental health problems before they cause pain or require more treatment.
