Not many of us fully understand stem cells and how they can benefit our lives, even when it comes to dentistry. Well interestingly enough Columbia University will be hosting the first International Conference on Dental Craniofacial stem cells. Good news.
Why is the study of dental and craniofacial stem cell research important?
Well for instance stem cells have been used to regrow jawbones and have also been used to treat periodontal disease.
Dental stem cells are being studied for their potential to play a role in therapies for type 1 diabetes, spinal-cord injury, heart attack and stroke, corneal damage, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
Who are the donors of stem cells?
Good question. Usually the donors of stem cells for dentistry are children and teenagers because they're more prone to losing their teeth.
The First International Conference on Dental and
Craniofacial Stem Cells will take place April 27-29.
