Healthy resolutions can keep your teeth healthy, and any of the following strategies will go a long way toward giving you a brighter, healthier smile in the coming year:
Eat healthier overall. Even if you do not indulge in a lot of sugary foods throughout the day, your diet may not be healthy. Keep a food diary for a week or two so you can really examine your eating habits and find the deficiencies. You may realize that your diet is woefully inadequate when it comes to vegetables; that is a good starting point so you can begin eating better.
Quit smoking or using other tobacco products. Using tobacco can harm your mouth in a number of ways, by increasing your risk for tooth discoloration, cavities, gum recession, gum disease and throat, lung and oral cancer. Smokers are about twice as likely to lose their teeth as non-smokers. But the good news is that the risk of tooth loss decreases after you quit smoking or using smokeless tobacco.

Help kids achieve better oral care. With children, oral habits can slip; monitor them carefully and offer a refresher course when needed. Remember that small incentives, such as a fun toothbrush or flavored toothpaste, can do wonders when it comes to getting kids to brush.

Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. Brushing and flossing protect your teeth from decay and gum disease, which is caused by your teeth’s most persistent enemy, plaque. Both brushing and flossing are equally important for good oral health, and according to the Academy of General Dentistry, only flossing can remove plaque from between teeth and below the gum line, where decay and gum disease often begins.
