Halloween is regarded as one of the most popular national holidays celebrated. Unfortunately, more than 250,000 men and women will be unable to take part in the celebration either with friends or their children as they venture out trick or treating on Wednesday, October 31. That’s because they are serving our country, many abroad in hostile locations like Afghanistan.
Many of my staff and I are former military (I was in the Navy and the Marine Corps as a dentist, active duty for 3 years and a reservist for 3 years, stationed at Parris Island and the Beaufort Naval Air Station and Naval Hospital), and we all remember how much it meant to us to be appreciated by the civilians whom we served.
So, for the fourth straight year, though, youngsters will be collecting their ghoulish sweets with an extra goal in mind. Aside from satisfying their sweet tooth with the delectable delights that are passed out by generous families and homes in our area.
These youngsters also will be collecting candies that will be donated to USO’s Operation Gratitude and sent to our troops overseas – as well a to Ronald McDonald House locally.
We will collect candy on November 5th, 6th and 7th during our normal business hours. Help show our appreciation to our brave young men and women who keep us safe – and to the children helped by Ronald McDonald House!
So, here’s the deal…
We want to encourage kids to bring us their extra candy and we’ll pay them for it with our Halloween Buy-Back Program!
With your help we can make this a Big Event!
I started the program for two reasons, one to encourage good oral health among our younger patients, secondly, I know there’s always a lot of leftover candy after the season. We always bought too much candy, or our kids brought back too much to handle.
I’ve had so many people tell me what a wonderful idea this is and I want to open this up to not just our patients, but to all children and parents in Irmo, Columbia and the surrounding areas.
You and /or your children will be able to bring the filled treat bags, or any candy they may have, into one of these 2 locations from November 5-7, 9:00a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

They earn a little money for their candy, our troops and families at Ronald MacDonald House get to share in the spirit of Halloween, the kids are eating less candy, and it takes the temptation away from moms and dads every time they walk past the candy dish…it’s a win-win for everyone!
Here’s a program that will be wide reaching and touch the hearts of many; not to mention, that October is National Dental Hygiene Month.
So let’s get involved and get our local boys and girls Trick or Treating for Our Troops and Ronald MacDonald House, (as well as themselves).
